Volkswagen bus

Theres this song,
“American Pie”.

Its eight minutes and thirty six seconds long,
and I know every second of it.

The song in my mind represents freedom,
because when I look ahead and I see nothing but darkness,
and I feel like my soul might be swallowed whole by the absence of hope,
I turn on the freedom song, and for those eight minutes and thirty six seconds,
I can see happiness.
I can see myself happy.
I picture the moment when I will become free.

I will be driving down this long road and I can’t see where I’m going yet.
But I’m in this volkswagen bus and its rusted and old, and almost broken down,
but I love it anyway.

And there are stacks and stacks of CD’s and books in the seat next to me, and the books have that rich, oaky smell, that make you feel like you are an old soul.

And on the windshield I have a dream catcher hanging, just so I can feel like I have place to store my dreams. In the back seat my bulldog “Willy” will be panting and holding his head out the window.

And I will look forward, like for that moment,
I’m not confused,
or scared,
or worried.
For that moment I will know that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

And I’ll look down and I’ll turn on the radio and the freedom song will be playing.
And for those eight minutes and thirty six seconds,
I’ll be free.

Don MacLean's song means so many different things to so many people. He himself says,"It is a story of America and its times." Being a much younger person at that time,  I can see that is the truth, but somehow  to me, it has the power also, as the author of this poem,  I have just reads  suggests  to give one the hope, and the freedom to be what you want to do and be. Oddly enough, I have felt the same way about it.  Perhaps, the song is so meaningf... (more »)
