Favorite Quote:
"Why?" -Aristotle

One day
when you were here,
I could not breathe
when you held her hand.
I held my breath for six months

And now you text me from
Vermont
Some time later,
I've heard poets describe these types
of things as sad,
some might romanticize a feeling of soft
melancholy.
And I'm so sorry. I'm sorry.
But I don't care enough about you
anymore
to respond.

The author's comments:
This poem is a work of fiction, I've fabricated everything to mimic the cynical, yet realistic style of Earnest Hemingway. After reading Farewell To Arms, I was inspired by his short, ugly, infantry of the mind sentence structure. I tried to incorporate this simple, minimalist style through careful word selection and raw description, setting a tone of realism through specific locations and time lapses. When a poet is describing the suffering of pain and heartbreak, extensive use of similes, metaphors and adjectives are used to convey very specific feelings. These descriptions are not realistic, they are redundant and romanticized, often glorifying the character's pain. I spent very little time elaborating on the narrator's experience with heartbreak, selecting my words carefully, but powerfully. I reject the idea that heartbreak should be seen as tragically beautiful.
