poem not written

i wrote a poem about you once
but i crumpled it because i couldn't find the
correct words to describe the
way your laugh is a vaccine
or the proper punctuation to explain
how i am vacant without you.
i rode the lines atop my ballpoint
pen searching for comfort between similes
of your hands like coastal dreams.
i offered the grand tour of my words and
you swept each letter aside
with a whisk of your new sperry’s
like you often do.
i wrote a poem about you once
but i couldn't bring myself to travel the
miles between our dots on a map.
i couldn't bring myself to stop smiling
and i crumpled the poem
before i ever started it
