Nighmares and Edges

Here you are again tonight
you slip out your sharp edges
like i knew you would
after my head ricocheted
against the concrete

as you twist this sharp edge
deeper inside of me
i feel it in every real, complete
and opprobrious way

it sinks deeper into my flesh,
and as my love stains the parking-lot red
I hear the metal grind against my marrow,
popping and cracking:
it is the more prominent pain
than this erratic, cliched white noise
of my selfish screams.

As I lie here - nearly unconscious -
almost numb; I begin to think
about how much I love you

and then I realize,
what is it that you’ve done to me?
this is never love, and yet I believe
with a fire in my bones
that your hatred and that wild, feral
light in your eyes
is the only thing I’ve ever thought
to be that allegedly flighty, beautiful
feeling.

“So I place my grief in the mouth of language, the only thing that will grieve with me.” ~ Lisel Mueller, “When I am Asked”
