Her eggs fertilized,
Mother mantis feasts
On her mate, so she may provide
Nutrients for her young.

What love for life father mantis must have.
He makes the ultimate sacrifice so willingly.
How brave he must be, to know
He gives life for children he will never see.

If a simple insect shows such passion,
Who is to say man cannot?
If the mantis has courage to abandon life for unborn offspring,
Who is to say man cannot?

If the mantis is willing to sacrifice the thing he holds most dear to children,
So they may have a chance at life, may continue existence of his species,
So they may be birthed to see light of the sun shining on this great world,
Who shall dare say man cannot?

While I hope you won't resort to cannibalism
To hold me to my word,
I hope to honor the mantis's sacrifice
In my undying love for you.

The author's comments:
This poem is inspired by the male praying mantis' bravery during his mating season. The mother mantis eats her mate when her eggs are fertilized, and the father must be very brave knowing his demise is near. I could only admire this sacrifice he makes, and I think we should all remember him when we are in love.
