We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.

Girl (delicate, wan) I pushed her
elegant body over the ravine
and expected her to know how to take the plunge:
to know how to land,
her body like a streamer,
floating like a feather
but instead,
she crumpled like a ball,
breaking each delicate bone of hers
with her fall
and I could only stare,
wishing I hadn't pushed her
but knowing I have.
She bleeds on the rocks below,
body splayed,
flinching at my approach.
I reach out to fix what I've done
but I've done enough damage.
I walk away,
leaving her broken.
