Don't You Dare

Don't do it.
Don't do it and end up a dandelion tattoo on your sister's shoulder blade.
Don't do it and make the teachers who supported you through high school disappointed.
Don't do it and make your friends feel so guilty that they didn't realize you were so hurt.
Don't do it and start a chain reaction.
Don't do it and make your sister wish it was her instead.
Don't do it and become a martyr for a cause that never helped you.
Don't do it and never know what it feels like to get help.
Don't do it and never know how much these people, who you thought didn't care, love you.
Don't do it and break their hearts.
Don't do it and leave your life's work unfinished.
Don't do it and leave your patients with no one to turn to.
Don't do it, because you will hurt everyone around you.
I know sometimes it feels like there's no one who cares.
I know it feels like you're a heap of bones, sunken and hollow in the corner of your being, held together in a bag of scarred skin.
I know it feels like that's how people treat you.
I know how much you want the pain to end.
I know how tired you are,
How unwanted you feel,
And how cold you feel, so deep you can't warm the chill.
I'm not going to tell you it gets better
Because I don't know if it really does.
I'm not going to tell you to grin and bear it
Because everyone else has thus far, and I know it only makes you hurt worse.
I will tell you that, as much damage as you think you do alive, you would do so much more dead.
I will tell you that no one will appreciate you more when you're gone.
I will tell you that there are reasons to keep going, even if it's just the neighbour boy who chases the ball for you when you play tennis,
Or the sound of an arrow hitting the bullseye,
Or the feeling of having a complete stranger relate completely to one of your stories,
Or the way that your seat in second period is so perfectly aligned with a beautiful little sunspot,
Or the look a teacher gives you when they hand back another test you've aced,
Or the way your friends are lonely and lost when you're gone too much at lunch.
You are worth so much more than you think.
You are worth so much more than a mere dandelion on your sister's shoulder blade.
And even though you feel like you've walked for miles, don't end yourself. Don't you dare. I know you can survive.
