petals on the countertop This work has been published in the Teen Ink monthly print magazine.

yesterday morning while i was out
shopping
i bought you sunflowers
and i arranged them in a
vase on the table
and they reflected the light of the sun
as it set behind the buildings.
but by the time you made it
home this morning
(exhausted and bruised,
smelling like smoke,
with a hickey beneath your jawline)
they were wilted and dying –
tired of waiting for you.

I love this poem. It was deep and well-written, meaningful and symbolic. Great job!
