Breathe Around

I breathe around the memories.
I take shallow breaths so I don't inhale another hug or smile or conversation.
Breathe through my mouth so I don't have to smell him,
Spearmint.
Slowly in-taking air so that my head hurts
Because I'm not getting enough, not getting enough,
Oxygen deprived;
But if I breathe deep,
The pain starts again.
I concentrate on my breath and it makes me tired.
But I'd rather count the seconds between inhale and exhale,
Seven,
Than count the steps away from me he is,
Too many.
And sometimes my breath catches in my throat
And a swallow another memory,
Choke on another smile or hug or conversation.
I'd rather breathe around the memories
Than walk on the broken pieces,
Than choke on the hugs,
Swallow the smiles,
Vomit the conversations.
I'd rather breathe around the memories
Than not breathe at all.
