A little girl asked, “Mom, why do you put on so much make-up?
You’re naturally beautiful, but it’s the first thing you grab when you wake up.”
But for mom this make-up isn’t for beauty, it’s to hide the pain
Hide the fact that liquor makes her husband insane
Comes home from the bar and beats her face black and blue.
Then tells his wife, “I only do this because I love you.”
So of course mom uses make-up and wears her darkest shades
The ironic story plot that this poem has already made
Sometimes nobody knows what happens behind closed doors
Mom never did any wrong, she deserved so much more
But we all know history repeats itself
Daughter grew up beautiful like mom but didn’t realize her self
Ended up with a man just like her dad
Experienced the same pain that her mother once had
Sometimes make-up covers up more that what’s outside
It temporarily heals the pain that someone may be trying to hide
Unfortunately the abuse went too far and she ran out of luck
Now the funeral home has to apply Mom’s make-up.
