She looked him in the eyes.
She said “baby, it is cold outside.”
She’s afraid of catching a cold.
He’s afraid to see her cry.
Scary how we will all end up like this.
Hanging on to every last word like maybe they are all worth it.
Still, I’ll sit and lay in your arms.
Watching the moon hang while you talk about the drugs you do.
Sometimes, I want to pack my things and walk away.
But I’ll be leaving my heart in the same place.
Baby, when they knock you down and out, is that where you want to stay?
After all of the sweat you’ve lost.
Life has become just another blow.
They say pain is just weaknesses leaving the body.
But your body is sore.
No medication can fix a broken brain.
A beautiful mind.
Your mind is ill.
Your mind is clouded.
You’re a man now.
Why fight it?
You’re a man now.
Are you afraid you’ll be just like him?
I don’t deny it.
He’s in your brain,
In the way you sway,
The reason you second guess everything you say.
He’s a piece of you and that will never change.
But he left you all alone.
We’ve all been so cold.
With our backs against the wall.
Thinking of what lies to say next.
You say how you’re fine.
You can look everyone in the eyes.
I’ve been through it so many times before.
Before “I’m fine,” because so repetitive.
Before your words hurt like knives when they come out.
Until you choke on your lies and give up.
Before you finally tell me the truth.
I’ve seen it happen before.
My body is young but my eyes have seen more than you know.
