"What is the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable." - John Green

I have so many math problems I should be doing
but I had a bad day and I can’t stop crying.

I have an essay I should be writing
but I took two hours to do sixty math problems.

I have a chemistry experiment I should be researching for
but my head is throbbing as I write my essay.

I have an art project I should be finishing
but I still have to finish my research.

I have photos for photography I have to take
but I still have to paint my art sculpture.

I have to go to softball practice
and I haven’t eaten dinner yet.

I have to write an article for the newspaper
but I’m tired from practice and have to finish my photography.

I have fifteen charts I need to make for computer tech
but I didn’t finish my newspaper article.

I have an SAT I should be studying for
but I need to finish the charts.

I studied for my SAT for two hours
and now it’s two in the morning.

I’m trying to fall asleep
but I have a throbbing headache.

I walk into the bathroom
and I chug down some Advil.

I plop back down on my bed,
and wait to repeat the process tomorrow.

The author's comments:
I wrote this after a long day at school because I felt it was fitting for many teens in high school. This poem just sums up the everyday, exhausting process that we have to endure to determine where we will be for the rest of our lives. Many adults don't realize how much higher expectations for schooling are becoming and how much work the school system piles on to teenagers in the most important years of their lives. Basically, I wanted to show what teens go through everyday after school.

"To these the past hath its phantoms,
More real than solid earth;
And to these death does not mean decay,
But only another birth"
- Isabella Banks

This is such a relatable poem! I can imagine myself, going through the motions, trying to hold every little thing together like I hae always tried to do, but realizing that eventually I'll have to rest for a moment and let a teacher or two down. Thanks so much for sharing this! CX
