Surrounded by white walls, I am trapped
Kids racing to get to their classes,
they don’t know why it is important or what this knowledge will serve them.
Expected to remember and understand it all, the bar has been set.
They want us to reach for it,
jump repeatedly for it,
just do whatever it takes to make it to that bar.
They tell us that once we stay there than our lifes will get easier,
go to college,
getting better jobs,
being Happy.
For those of us who miss though,
now thats a story that should be shared.
They say that we will live in horrid homes with rags for clothes.
They say that we will have greasy hair from flipping patties all day.
They say that we will never be successful,
never be happy.
To this I scream at the top of my lungs,
I yell at the students that pass me by.
Telling them not to listen to their lies,
to follow their own path that they wish to pave.
For their spirits to be set free and move with the wind,
for them never to give up on their dream.
Not the dream to reach the bar in time or get a great job,
no the dream to go where you wish,
to live the life you want to live.
Not mattering where you go,
what you shall do,
who you shall be,
or who will you love.
Those are the bars we should aim to reach.
