As Time Elapses

I think it’s ironic
how that every time
we come to make contact,
embrace, or scratch the surface
of a petty, parched conversation
that we have had countless times
over the past ten years of our lives
to fill in the silence that haunts us,
that though our outlooks may change,
attitudes may mature and ideas may develop
to unfold and clothe our realities like fabrics
composed of the intentions formed inside our minds
that we still can’t adapt to our immutable past
that we will never soon forget;
the way you used your hurtful mockery
to evoke my hidden emotion and rage
and address my faults to a crowd like
a pre-written comedy act just to spite me,
or how you exited through the door of my home,
rather swam through with a pool of laughter
surrounding you with every wise crack at my innocence,
with my bloody organs still pumping substance
in the palms of your mighty hands
as you introduced me to the end of a prolific life.
That act isn’t so funny to me though,
the person you abandoned and tarnished some ages ago,
and not so funny in departure from your lips
to the desires and dreams I held close inside
at one point in time as it elapsed by
my oblivious optics.

Brilliant wording. I felt like I was reading something by Eliot or Roethke perhaps. I enjoy the (subtle?) bitterness at the end. It's as though you want to get over whatever this person has done to you but you can't, and somewhat refuse to do so.
