The Color of Happiness

As a child I collected paint swatches
and pinned them to my ceiling
like constellations smattered across the night sky
so I could lay down and stare up at them
looking for the color of happiness.
“Maybe it’s that one,” I’d say, pointing at cerulean,
but after a while the yellows and blues and greens
would seep together into undistinguishable mixtures
so I’d get up and buy a new Pantone book
hoping that one day happiness would just
hit me like an Amtrak.
