I Never Know

They ask me
What do you want to be when you grow up
But I never know

They ask again, insisting I answer
Do I have to know at this moment?

They nod yes
You must have some inkling of what you want to do

I shrug
I don't know, I've looked at a few things

Well go on
They look at me in anticipation

Deep inside I do know, though
Deep inside the fire of a passion burns

I finally get the courage to tell them
I reveal my deepest passion

I wait patiently for their response
The air is thick with tension

They tell me it is stupid
They tell me I can not do that

Well then, why did you ask?
Now I am back to square one

They ask me
What do you want to be when you grow up
But I never know
