"Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent"
--Eleanor Roosevelt

My father and I never danced one dance
My father and I always fought the same fight

My father and I never shared the same taste
My father and I always had the same wide nose

My father and I will never dance at my wedding
My father and I will always be distant

My father was always leaving
I was never going

My father was always talking to me
I was never talking back to him

My father always said “I love you”
I never had a response

This poem is about my relationship with my father, who left my mother and me when I was about 3. He has recently tried to come back into my life and this poem is about some feelings that this has stirred up.
