Pillars of smoke
rise
in couplets
emitting
fumes of
rubber and gas.
The tires,
in fiery dance,
burn away
essence.
The rebels
watch
their work:
to burn
the edges of
society.
I watched,
glad school was
cancelled.

The author's comments:
I stood as a young boy, in awe, in my home country in front of a fire that reached the skies. I was witnessing for the first time an act of rebellion, the work of the masses of the common folk who demanded change. I watched the empty streets being consumed by the smoke which rose from the burning tires in the middle of the street with the eyes of an infant who has sighted a toy for the first time. The moment has stayed with me all these years, its power and message still moving within my bones.
