"And somehow a dog has taken itself & its tail considerably away into the mountains or sea or sky, leaving behind: me, wag." -John Berryman (Dream Song 14)

When he brushed his teeth
he noticed the broken leaves on his
toothbrush
and the grass that had begun to grow in
the sink.
And he gradually became aware
of the flowers that sprouted from his tongue
like a warm summer day was trapped
between his teeth.

That night when he kissed his wife,
he tasted the bitterness of burnt roses
and a rotting garden.
Like a cold winter had been hiding
behind her arctic white teeth.
And when he opened his mouth to talk,
butterflies flew away,
despite their dying wings.

I wrote this about my parents, in the most indirect way I could find.

For you, a thousand times over.

This is beautiful. The language you use is lyrical. No surprise this was published...
