To My Child

Don’t forget how much I love you.
When I hug you, feel my heart beating
And remember that you are part of it.
Don’t forget how much I love you.
My aging hands might be rough to your small, soft ones,
But remember that they are ready to wipe away your tears
And remind you how much I love you.
When you leave my arms
Don’t forget that they are open for visiting
And don’t forget how much I love you.
Your wings may be strong and beautiful,
But remember who helped you grow them
And remember how much they love you.
And when I die, sweet child, feel my heart quiet
And remember that you are still a part of it -
Just in a more beautiful place than this temporary home.
Don’t forget how much I loved you
And don’t forget that I still do.
