These Walls
These cold, hard walls protect me
They protect me from my fears of the outside world
My internal fears
The fears that never turn into an external conflict
Because I remain hidden from the world

My life is a metaphor
I am that caged bird that refuses to sing
The symbolic melodies are on repeat in my mind but never escape these walls
These walls
The walls that run deep
Through my cavernous soul
I can hear the echoes
The echoes of that young girl that wants to escape
She pounds on the walls but the guards can’t hear her

These wall imprison me
Stripping me of my sanity
Of my innocence
The predator seeks his prize
Yet he never pounces
He only speaks word of so-called wisdom into her ears
Tricking her into dancing with him
Stripping away layers of flesh with every twirl

Clouds and sunshine turned into ashes and shadows
Perching atop those walls
Oh, how I dread these walls
The walls that took away my life

And if these walls could talk
They wouldn’t dare tell the tales of the dark
They would stay silenced
Just like me
Never to tell what occurred on those cold nights
That made the paper peel from them
That made the little girl shiver with every gust of wind
that made its way through that broken dusty window in the corner
These walls will never tell, neither will I

And these walls, those walls
Symbolize barriers
Barriers that keep one out and trap one in
Never to be seen again

These walls are mine
