The Love that Lets Go

There’s the love of true bosom friends,
Finishing the other’s sentences and
Communicating silently.
It is the love that means
Always remembering her birthday
and always knowing the right words.

There’s the love of the closest siblings,
Clambering up trees together,
Kissing scraped knees and
Falling asleep side by side in the backseat.
It is the love that means
Calling him crying and
Running away from home.

There is even the love of a soul sister,
Up late whispering in the dark
Moving with deliberate slowness,
To make sure the couch doesn’t creak.
It is the love that means
His fingers on her skin,
Her lips on his, and
The moonlight on the windowsill.

But the love that we have is different still;
It is the love of a memory,
The secret nights dewy and
Your eyes regretful.
It is the love that means
Walking away and not looking back,
The love that means
Saying you’re sorry and letting go.
