Growing up with English

At the age of four, I set out on a journey to master the English language.
I stepped into a whole new world –
classroom, friends and surely chattering on and on.
I started out with lines and curves –
alphabets they are called – ABC they went.
Through playing and coloring,
we chanted the Alphabet mantra – A for Apple, B for Ball…,
Laughing and giggling, amused to find one’s own voice in the choir of stumbling rhymes.
With pictures of ripe, juicy apples and shooting aeroplanes,
we got up our sleeves a few new words.

Years passed, gone about in joyous education.
Introduced to Grammar and its strangeness,
I fail to understand why brilliant minds make a fuss over small things?
Noun is a word, adjective describes it, pronoun replaces it.
When this is all we need put our minds to work,
what use are those huge definitions and all?
Writing and Reading is surely soothing company;
Evoking our imagination and drawing the scenes before our eyes,
it is so easy to lose oneself in the tales of our dreams.
From playing with fire to finding our Prince Charming, books seem to know everything.

But a small thought lingers in the back of my head;
English is so familiar yet so strange
For there are still a million words out of my knowledge and a lot more unknown to me.
By the time I go through all of it, I am sure to have grown grey hair.
I can bet that till the time I rest in my grave,
I will ponder over the strangeness of this peculiar language.

I really like this poem, I like how you analyze the English language and its meaning to you. I'm sure many people can relate to this although many people simply take language for granted. Well Done! =)
