Jessica and 3rd Grade
My cherished bear bookmark sits in my room.
Its smiling face
with the white word of “Canada”
shakes loose a memory.
I remember Jessica.
Here’s the story…
Jessica is- no, was my friend in Mrs. Deininger’s class.
I was the new kid.
I had no one,
and she introduced herself
with a smile.
We became friends
over laughing with other girls,
hiding things from boys,
and joking around.
One time she took a trip
to Canada
and brought me back a cute,
black bookmark.
Now it sits with my books,
reminding about
certain things like
how she wanted to play
an instrument with me
and how she got sick
on World Cultures Day.
Today she goes to
another school
and is no longer Jessie.
Things are different now
and I’ve changed too.
Though she may not feel the same,
each time I glance at her gift
her laughter echoes in my ears,
our laughter echoes in my ears.

It reminds everyone who has ever been the new girl of that feeling, but it has your own memories as well. I love the last line
