Be Afraid

How idiotic,
“Don’t be afraid”
That’s like saying,
Don’t flinch when you’re punched
Don’t scream when startled
Don’t react
Don’t live
Don’t feel
Walk through life with stone walls surrounding you, protecting you from anything new and spooky
What I should have been told was:
Be afraid
Be afraid to try new things
Be afraid of the dark, and the boogeyman
Be very, very afraid.
But don’t let your fear keep you from doing the things you love
When you hesitate on the steps to the stage
To read the poem you wrote,
Be so afraid that your legs shake violently and you fear you may fall over,
but do it anyway
