Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace

You promised we would build an eternal palace,
On an empty island called Home,
Spend years beside waves: wet, reaching hands,
Erasing opinions, history, critique

Its crystal walls dazzling, sparkling in sunbeams,
Iridescent in the bath of stars and moonlight,
Turrets festooned by azure sapphires, opaque obsidian,
Like a million eyes standing watch

They would notice the princess, you pledged,
Along with her forever prince, mesmerized
Dancing on the balcony, garlanded with pearls,
On infinite, summer evenings

We thought we had everything,
Picking apples from gardens might never hurt,
A generous slice of pie must have been guaranteed,
The moment we stepped out, imagining

That is how we shaped our paradise—dreams,
Hopes, wishes, desires morphed into one,
A shaky foundation that could never be wavered,
Blueprints for success bound with failure

Never erect a crystal palace,
A solitary rock thrown from pasts,
Might shatter it into a billion shards,
Embedding in sand, twinkling with my tears.
