It was so surprising
When we nearly drowned
In our own bath water.
Gasping, thrashing,
Reaching for a hand to hold,
But we only had ourselves,
Didn’t we?
Shivering, shaking,
Looking for a grip,
Anything to keep a hold of the present
Without being sucked into the past.
But we only had our mistakes,
Didn’t we?
