stand at my grave and sing me your hymns (tell me that's not love)

1
and here lies the girl
that was strong
until words wore away
at her walls of stone

maybe next time—

fool me once
shame on you

fool me twice—

maybe next time—

2
and here lies the girl
that fell to her knees
and prayed for sleep

3
and here lies the girl
that wore bracelets
half to her elbow
to hide her growing tally of
the days she wished had never come

to pretend that she was
as happy
as everyone wanted her to be

4
and here lies the girl
that wore
a hamsa around her neck

she pressed a wish into her palm
and wrapped her fingers round it tight
because maybe
she might just get lucky

5
and here lies the girl
you didn’t bother
to know

the girl that wanted peace
and
got war instead

6
and here lies the girl that
never believed
in fairytales
until you forced them upon her

the girl
that the universe
didn’t make bargains with

7
and here lies the girl
that was strong
until words wore away
at her walls of stone

the girl that was neither
as happy
nor as sad

not quite as broken
nor as whole
as you wished her to be

the girl that you
didn’t want to
save
