ultima stet (last stand)

(Here stands the girl
that asked for an
audience with the king
and was sent away,
like a present deemed
unfit and returned,
gift receipt attached.

You make that joke a lot
and you don’t wait long enough
to see me flinch.

You tell me to leave a note,
if I’m gone before you wake
the sun shining in

There’ll be a note on the pillow, then—

all that’s left of the girl—

there once was a girl—

I used to be the girl—

that you didn’t love.
And who thought that,
even standing so close to the candle,
she wouldn’t get burned.

She was wrong.)
