Our Fate

There's no real way I can capture you,
You.
With your jokes and tricks and strength and
Truth.
You.
I'd like to believe that you always told me the truth,
And it was simply reality that changed, not
You.

Precious.
Looking back, we had just a handful
Of undying moments,
Whispers that made me your own.
Now that you've left me,
I can only wonder,
Confused, without you,
Alone.

I ask myself,
“Who are you,
Did you change?”
Two months of love
With such a buildup
Ended in a moment of pain.
How could you let
Some parroted belief
Determine our fate?
How could you let
Someone else's rules
Choose who you date?
You could have stayed with me,
Been a rule-breaker, not a heart-taker...
If they hadn't told you,
You would have stayed with me.

Now that you're gone,
I feel you the most.
Our words, our hands, your arms around me,
Now I just feel the arms of a ghost.
You believed in me for who I was,
Who I am,
And what I'm going to be.
You loved my goals,
Praised my dreams,
Us two companions,
We were so happy.
I thought you needed me,
Your trust and voice I protected.
You gave me your past,
Your shattered past,
Now all I can ask is “what happened?”

I'll never blame you
For what you didn't know,
Or that walk on back roads
Where you kissed me.
I won't regret,
Time wants me to forget,
But instead, I'll just let you rest,
Because forgetting you is impossible
And always will be.

Written 11/21/12. I wrote this poem for a friend to help her get over a tough break-up. I wanted to show her that you can turn bad feelings like pain and confusion into beautiful art through writing. She loved it, so I felt pretty successful.
