An Exercise in Futility
An exercise in futility;
Staring at the shadows,
Waiting for them to move,
Hoping that one of them
Might say hello.
So lonely are you
That you wait on a bench,
That you stare at the shadows
In hopes of a companion.
An exercise in futility,
But a hobby
And a habit.
Of those I have neither.
So you may waste
Your time and your life.
Waiting and watching
The shadows that never move.
But you are better off than I,
Because you don’t mind
What you do,
It secretly pleases you.
While I am nothing.
While I pretend
That I am better
Because what I do
Has purpose.
But does it?
Does it really?
If I have a job
That serves other people
That’s good-
So I’m told.
But if I’m unhappy
And bored.
If I want to run away,
Is it still good?
If all I get from it
Is nothing,
And you get hope-
Who really is
The one worse off?
Perhaps my life,
My job ,
And my so-called purpose,
Really is,
Only an exercise in futility
