"Where words fail, music speaks." -William Shakespeare

Woven silk croons gentle lullabies against bare skin.
Ears ring with a consistent humming;
white noise and dim voices.

Melting into a satin embrace of
warm vapor,
feather-light hair scathes my rosy cheek.

Chubby fists and tiny fingers
beat the air,
reaching for an unknown source of adoration.

Infant?

Storm clouds shroud the
ambiguous clarity of my mind.
Failing to comprehend the
delicacy of new life,

Maternal instincts struggle to develop.

What?

Confusion sweeps over me like a thunderous tidal wave.
Eyelashes fluttering over
icy blue eyes,

Everything changes around me.

A barely audible whimper
from the bundle of life
in my lap.

A flash of emerald green.

Her eyes?

Dimples beneath the innocence of a toothless grin.

Her smile?

I hum a gentle lullaby
with a voice of lukewarm melted silver.

Words form on my tongue,
a gentle lilt adding a
twinge of careful curiosity.

Do you know who I am?

A tiny voice rings like
silver bells in frigid cold air.

Mommy.

Tears mist over once stony eyes,
Leaving me temporarily blinded.

Overwhelming adoration takes over.
Everything bleeds into darkness.

Wake up.
