Always remember the dark of the night,
The fog in the morning, their very last fight.
Never forget the bullets ripping through the air,
The cries of the wounded, their very last prayer.

Another star has left the sky
I think, why did they have to fight?
Forever in debt to them are we,
Always remember why we are free.

Always remember the peace before,
The footsteps, the talking, the laughter no more.
This battle has changed all of their lives,
Some soldiers are wounded, some shall die.

Another star has left the sky
I think, why did they have to die?
Forever in debt to them are we,
Always remember why we are free.

Always remember the sun in the sky,
The battle survivors, fire in their eyes.
They fought for their country with courage and pride,
The spirit inside them shall never die.

Another star has left the sky
For us, these soldiers gave their lives.
They fought for our country, for you and me,
Always remember why we are free.

This poem was originally for a book to be presented to war veterans at my school's Living History Day. My English teacher loved it so much, she suggested that I read it at the assembly. I then decided to put it on Teen Ink for you to read. I hope you like it!
