Forever Lost

We laid together beneath the setting sun, you and I,
Its diaphanous fingers reaching through the pines
And brushing your cheekbone like a sculptress
Infusing life into her creation.
Your bosom rose and fell like the dipping of a swallow,
A line of curvaceous symmetry.
Your lips parted slowly into a smile as you turned
And our eyes
Met.

I reached out and touched your face,
My fingertips etching the contour of your jaw
And the soft fullness of your lips
Into that place of hallowed memory.
A thousand words filled my heart with trembling emotion
And it was then I knew what true poetry was.
Though they strained to be uttered,
Something held me back and I
Could not.

I felt the warmth as your hand
Took mine and you kissed it,
And then the cold as you laid it on the grass.
I heard you get to your feet and start towards the house
While agony overcame my soul
As I watched the moment,
Like the last rays of the sun,
Vanish into time’s eternal
Darkness.
