Stairway to Heaven

9000 feet in the air
Sharp, clean mountain breeze fills the hikers noses
Creating a dry taste in their mouths
Crumbly rusty rock underfoot

Misty purple clouds fill the horizon
Whistling wind traveling through the calderas

The clouds spread out like a blanket
Reflecting the orangey sky
The sun splays around the edge of the foreboding volcano
Slowly falling behind it

A lone peak rises above the cover
Outlined in yellow and salmon
Some long, sparsely shaded clouds fly ahead
like busy New Yorkers
Almost in our reach.

I rest on candy rocks
While watching the sun make its slow descent.
