I still hear
Your bark
And miss the way you
Protected me from the dark
You were my best friend
Someone I could count on till the very end.
No monster
Could ever catch me
In my sleep
Because of you
I was able to count sheep.
The white, cold snow flakes
Fall on our face
As we would run
Through the shivering cold snow
Having a race.
You would nibble
On my feet
It would make me
Laugh so hard
That I could not breathe

Oh, and that time when Mom and Dad went to Vegas


You ran into
The big yellow school bus
To greet me when I got home from school
I’ve never felt so wanted in my life.

You taught me
Many things in life
Such as,
Love everyone around you,
Protect the ones around you,
And never run away from home
Because dad will give you a big spanking.

You would let me
Ride on your back
As I would play cowboy
From the wild,
Wild west.
Or how
You would let me
Follow you around
Like I was a dog.
I bet you were pretty upset
When I ate your Scooby snack
I’m actually really sorry about that
I should have let you have it,
It tasted like crap.

I never trusted
Someone so much,
You were so gentle,
And caring.
You let me lay on you,
Wrestle with you,
Use you as a bridge
For my toy cars
But most of all,
You let me be your friend.

The day I found out
That you had
mouth cancer
Still sits in my mind like a heavy boulder.
I watched your body
Crumble
I wished it was me
Feeling your pain.
I couldn’t take it
Anymore,
Watching you mope around.
I remember
That day,
Coming home from school.
Mom and Dad said
They put you down.
I felt like I was kicked
In the ribs
I could not breathe,
Just like you were nibbling
On my feet
And instead of laughing,
I cried harder than I have ever had.
