It’s January.
My hero leaves today.
Only nine short months,
still all too long.

The calls and messages,
spare in frequency,
brings smiles.
Yet pierce’s your heart,
hoping is not the last.

I pray for his safety.
I pray for his return.

It’s April now.
I’m sitting in class.
I get the message.

My hero
is never coming home.

In that moment
I am motionless.
I feel nothing.
The thoughts in my head,
like his life,
gone completely.

April 3 2012,
The day I lost

My Hero.

SSG Tyler J. Smith was my inspiration for this poem. He was my boyfriends brother and was very close to me. While serving over seas he was killed on April 3, 2012. That day was the hardest thing for his family, me, and friends and the community. He had the best personality and I don't know anyone that had anything bad to say about him. He was a true Hometown Hero. There is not one day that goes by that he is not missed. It would mean a lot if this poem got published.
