"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." -Harriet Tubman

I don't want to be the girl
who always has to have her friends by her side
who can only say goodbye
if someone else says it first

I don't wanna be that girl who's
all helpless and innocent
who can't fend for herself
or make her own decisions

I want others to know that wealth
is not measured
by what's in your wallet
People are worth more than that

I want to be more than that
I want to be stronger than that

I'd like to think there's more to life
than sitting in an ivory tower
brushing my hair and picking flowers
waiting for a suitor to come and save me
I want to be able to chase my own dreams
and forget destiny

I want to go to school
and learn things I've never imagined before
I want to write my own stories
and dream my own dreams
grab life by the horns
I don't want to be told who I should and shouldn't be
or accept a girl's social norms
I'll be who I want to be
and your just going to have to learn to deal

I don't want to be the girl who has to have perfect hair
all the time
and wear the perfect couture
or else she's insecure

I want to have my own dreams and aspirations
my own feelings and ambitions

I want to be able to be myself
and decide for myself what's best for me
Because nobody can tell me how to live my life
That will never suffice with me

And it bothers me
how you think I need someone to take care of me
like I can't pay my own way
but you wouldn't give me the time of day
Better seen and not heard
But I'm not that type of girl

I want to act on my ambition
and throw caution out the window
and not ask for permission
to do what I want to do with my life
No one has the right to tell me how to live it
that's the beauty of living
living without a care in the world
of what others think of you
or wondering if they believe in you
you only need to wonder if you believe in yourself

Be more than a stereotype
Be one to inspire
and be inspired
Be who you want to be
and do what you want to do
because there are a million others
but there's only one you

This is a poem I wrote about being strong enough to be yourself.
