Skinny Lovers

Our hands
clasped tightly
pink polish and rough
calluses.
They whisper-
eyes bearing holes.
Watching and waiting
ready to pounce on
our burdened backs,
Ready to tear and reel
us down.

Our hearts
linked together
-aging couples-
but they only see
a young girl
and her beau.
Not two people
two souls-
joined at the hip.
We are only children
too incompetent for love.

You whisper to me,
oh, so delicately,
forever and ever.
A ruler in between
creeping us apart
inch by fragile
inch.

A flickering gaze
indecisively meant
for me.
Maybe they were right,
maybe-
just maybe-
Those smeared
red kisses
were deceiving us
from the very start.

Hold my heart
for me, my love.
I never thought
we were just like
all the others-
skinny lovers.
