5 Ways to Look at a Tree

Gnarly column
Of weathered time
Silently holding the weight of the universe

Swaying slender arms with golden
Sun speckled, fluttering
Whispers that tell every story
From where this wind has blown

Standing majestic for decades until
Cut short
Unheard whimpers seeping
Like a trickle of water
From the heart of our world

In the patch of shade by the corner of the yard
I sat on summer afternoons
An icy glass of lemonade
Gazing up to my mother’s canopy

The moon peeking through
Bony black branches
Like a cold silver coin casts shivering
Shadows on the frozen ground
