Forever

There used to be a pond
deep
blue
mystical
full of untold secrets
with the sun shining off
the clear surface.

We took the old rowboat out
back and forth
back and forth
we could do it
forever.

I thought the pond would be here
be my friend
relax me
comfort me
forever.

But
the rain
stopped
coming.

Now the pond
is gone
forever.

The land is dry
like a desert
with the sun beating down hard
forever.

There are no rainstorms
to soothe
the thirsty plants that have shriveled down.
ugly weeds taking over.

I hope
it’s not like this
forever.

The author's comments:
I was inspired to write this from English Class. We were supposed to choose a piece of art and write a piece of poetry about it. I chose "Teel's Island" by Andrew Wyeth, and the picture was in black and white, so I came up with this poem. I wanted to tell a story.
