So many types
Of fish scales

There is my friend
A true beauty
Layers of color form an intricate sheath
Designed to dazzle
Bluesilverpinkyellowrainbow
A grandeur of color
The beacon that attracts all eyes

Then there is me
A real nightmare
Hideous shades twist together
Designed?…
Graybrowndankmuddymess
An absence of appeal
The monstrosity no one can look at

I scuttle drearily alongside
Watching the beautiful one talk
And
GULP
The only color now
Is inside me
You can look at my scales now.
There is nothing else to look at.

The author's comments:
Jealousy and low self-esteem form a potent mix that can dissuade rationality. When we feel this way, often the spur-of-the-moment leads us to act unreasonably and act despicably; even towards our most precious friends.
