I sit here gazing at the innocent young faces
So hopeless, So helpless, So in need
I should be protecting them
I am their father, I should provide.

Six months ago my life changed forever
Like many others, I lost my job
No work, no money, no food
I am their father, I should provide.

Went to the soup kitchen to get dinner
Lines wrapped around the building
People fighting all around us, all wanting food
I am their father, I should provide.

Selling apples on the street to earn a couple dollars
This is the only way to get money
I will do whatever it takes
I am their father, I should provide.

People dying all around me
Hunger, illness, weakness, no one to care for them
I do not want this to happen to my children
I am their father, I should provide.

The kids are at school getting an education
They will not follow in their fathers footsteps
My children will never go through this again
I am their father, I should provide.

This is the hardest thing we have ever gone through
We fight hard, we will survive
I will do whatever it takes to make them happy
I am their father, I should provide.

The more we stick together the easier things are
We are a family and that will never change
They will get an education and will sell apples
I am their father, I will provide.

This is a piece was inspired by the Great Depression. It shows the hardships that fathers and children went through. I am hoping people will gain an understanding of this terrible time in America's history.
