In a dirty kitchen
a mother
fries eggs in an old skillet
for her son
while he sleeps comfortable
in shabby bedroom
down the hall.
her love for him
doesn’t always show
but her meager pay
feeds him, even when
it can’t feed her.
he won’t suffer
the same small existence
if she can help it.
