Over the Fence

I climbed over the fence,
And through the woods,
My heart singing,
With the birds.
Across grassy fields,
I flew.
Higher and higher,
Until only a speck in the blue.
Distant shores beckoned me,
Waves crashing strong.
The salty spray catching my wings,
So I could not go on.
Across sun-bleached deserts,
I ran.
Faster and faster,
Over the wild sand.
With the touch of cold forgotten.
A mirage quivers in the heat,
Tricking my eyes,
And my wandering feet.
Grasping what I can imagine,
But beyond what I can believe.
In an ancient forest,
Tall trees whisper with their leaves,
Forgotten,
But not alone.
As flowing streams,
Twist and roam.
With the wind on my face,
I can feel,
All that is free,
All that is real.
The sky and the clouds,
And the sun that sneaks,
Quietly in the morn,
Over the mountain peaks.
Breathlessly,
A flower opens,
And I finally crawl,
Back over the fence.
