take one --

take one –
a boy grins, a girl laughs
takes his hand, squeezes innocently
falls a little bit in love
take two –
they’re a little older, now
a little wiser, a little more jaded
the girl doesn’t laugh much, anymore
and the boy only smirks
take three –
the girl gets a letter
calling her away from the boy
drawing her into the world of academia
the boy gets a job offer
across the country
life’s a b****
take four –
four years later, she feels used
and dirty-broken-bruised
he feels empty
and they crawl back towards the middle again
take five –
a boy drops to his knee
a girl cries
says no
runs away
a boy’s heart breaks
because a girl thinks she’s not good enough
take six –
it takes them seven years
seven years to find themselves
back where they began
a boy grins
a girl laughs
a piece of the puzzle finds its way home
