The Hardship of War

Adrenaline rushes through his veins
His shaky fingers struggle to hold
The gun he loads in the midst of battle
The American’s heart pounds in his ears
His throat dries and his voice dies away
He sees the enemy lines advancing
While his own line falls away

The Redcoat’s menacing eyes he sees
Lock their gaze on the helpless soldier
The American’s friend; a close comrade
The hard-hearted Redcoat cruelly murders
The poor young American is horrified
And stares dumbstruck at the corpse
Who had been like a brother to him

Then the cold blooded Redcoat turns to him
Showing in his coal black eyes
A steely gaze; the fire of hate
With wounded limbs and battered body
The young American is helpless
The Redcoat draws his pistol

But a sudden stab of sympathy
Washes over his malicious soul
The American is just a boy
Frightened, confused, defenseless
But an enemy nevertheless

The innocent boy’s eyes plead for life
The Redcoat cocks his shiny pistol
He pulls the trigger with no regret
The poor American saw only darkness
He saw no light in the hardship of war
