Red, White, and Blue

The colors of justice,
of independence,
of hope.
Fifty stars representing our unity.
Thirteen stripes to remind us of the courage
of our nation’s forefathers.
Our friends and family
fight to protect the meaning of this icon.
In May, 1776, did Betsy Ross realize that
she was laying the cornerstone
for an emblem that would represent the very principals
this nation was based upon?

Some may say it’s only fabric.
But I believe
it is inspiration.

The inspiration for this poem came from a normal day in class. As we followed our morning routine of saying the pledge, I stopped to ask myself, "Why?" And decided there was no better way to answer that question than through some poetry.
