His Song

If only I spent another minute
Stringing dandelion wreaths
Across my parakeet’s cage.
If only I spent another minute
Listening to his song of dawn
Each day with heartfelt notes
Although no one wove sunny
Flowers for him—then maybe,
He would have known I cared.

If only I spent another minute
Watching him preen, feathers
Radiant despite dreary skies.
If only I spent another minute
Lifting his clasped feet on my
Bent fingers, his chirps soaring
Into clouds in search of sun—
Then maybe, I could have been
The sun that he never found.
