A Father's Promise

Its 2 o clock in the morning
Yet 5 o clock at night
Mom yelled daddy’s on the phone
I ran with all my might
He asked how the season was going
I told him I was hitting well
What I really wanted to do
Was in frustration yell
He said take care of mommy
She’s been working very hard
I told him I would do my best
And study very hard
He told me eat my vegetables
So I would grow up big and strong
The last thing he said was I love you
And it won’t be very long
